University and the City

The university should be a welcome asset for the city that aspires to thrive in the knowledge-based economy. It also has a range of good things for the city in terms of empolyment, social services, cultural opportunities and community development. Yet the relationship between the university and the community has not always been harmonious, especially regarding the problems of campus expansion, traffic congestion and parking.

o Korea University's campus expansion takes a form of urban renewal 2011. 4. 21.

o University of Washington and the City of Seattle contemplates designating "Innovative Zone" near the university in conjunction with the opening of light rail station. 2011. 7. 19.

o Kendall Sqaure, Cambidge, MA and MIT (Case study needed)

o IIT and Tech Park, Chicago, IL. "IIT (where I go) has this type of thing with Tech Park (a set of buildings for start ups and the like) and IITRI (a 20 story tower full of research and some other tennants that help pay the school's bills) (IIT Research Institute) Where professors and Alum have set up offices and hire students to work with them on the latest and greatest. IT works well. This is taking the university and turning it into a univercity, where a lot of things are self-contained, but innovation and opportunity are present in great volume."

o Seongbuk-Gu, Seoul - New district mayor sees university differently. 2011. 9. 5.
