Compact City, Compact Living
Compact city has been much touted as a promising way of sustaining urban growth in Western countries. Notable western theories such as New Urbanism or Urban Renaissance support this mode of intense living in the pursuant of environmental, socio-economic and aesthetic objectives. Interestingly many Korean planners follow this doctrine to intensify their already dense urban living. Nonetheless, neither how compact is compact has been clarified nor their cultural varience seriousely scrutinized. Further, it has not been clear whether compactness is an ideal mode of livig or unavoidable one that we simply must accept. Here is an intersting story of compact living in Hong Kong, arguably the most compact city in the world.
