Public Health and the City

Cities are winning. The common sense is that cities are crowded, with bad air, and contaminated, and thus bad for health, meaning urban people live shorter than rural. The survey result shows the opposite: To have longer life, live in the city. The similar pattern is fouund in America. Manhattan people live one year longer that rural people. They speculates that tranisit use of New Yorkers reduces the risk of car-hitting. In Korea, longer living of urban people is believed due to better medical facilities.

Density and City Size

o Urban Density and Economic Performance 2011. 9. 8.

Interesting argument that denser cities are performing better in creating jobs - so to solve hihg unemployment in the US, packing people in the city areas. NYT introduces this idea from an urban economist whoes theory bases on innovation, entrepreneurship, skilled workders, social network, information exchange, all best harnessed by close proximity of people in a limited space called city.
